University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has provided guidelines that allow students to pursue two academic programs simultaneously. This initiative aims to provide students with more flexibility in their education, enabling them to acquire diverse skills and knowledge.

UGC “Guidelines for Pursuing Two Academic Programmes Simultaneously” or Two Degree at a Time.

Simultaneous Enrollment: Students can pursue two full-time academic programs in physical/ regular mode, provided the class timings do not overlap.

Combination of Modes: A student can pursue one program in full-time physical/regular mode and another in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or Online mode, or pursue two ODL/Online programs simultaneously.

Exclusions: The guidelines do not apply to Ph.D. programs, as the research involved in a Ph.D. typically requires a full-time commitment. Hence Ph.D. researcher students cannot pursue any other course simultaneously with their Ph.D.

Recognition of Institutions: ODL/Online programs must be pursued through institutions recognized by UGC or other statutory bodies.

2. Flexibility in Education:

The guidelines align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for a more flexible and multidisciplinary education system.

They aim to remove rigid boundaries between different disciplines and offer multiple pathways for learning.

3. Objectives:

Holistic Development: Foster unique capabilities in students, promoting holistic growth in both academic and non-academic areas.

No Hard Separations: Eliminate divisions between arts and sciences, curricular and extra-curricular activities, and vocational and academic streams.

Multidisciplinarity: Encourage education across various disciplines like sciences, arts, humanities, and sports.

Character Development: Focus on deep learning in specialized areas while fostering character, ethical values, intellectual curiosity, and creativity.

4. Implementation:

Universities can devise mechanisms to allow students to pursue two academic programs simultaneously as per these guidelines.

5. Significance: The regulations are expected to help Indian students obtain foreign degrees, improving their employability in the global job market.

These guidelines are designed to provide more opportunities for students to gain diverse knowledge and skills, enhancing their career prospects and personal development.

This approach by UGC is expected to increase the employability and skill sets of students, allowing them to tailor their education to meet their career goals.
